All papers should follow MLA format and be written in size 12 font with standard margins, double spaced, etc. Your paper should also include a bibliography. You may cite the original play, “A Tempest,” or either of the stagings of the play. You may also cite from the articles in the Signet edition or the Loomba article.
Write a (minimum) 1200 word paper based on one of the following prompts:
“The Tempest” is full of recurring images: books, clothing, etc. Write a paper describing the significance of one such image throughout the play. Use support from the text to explain how this image is allegorical or a metaphor, how it moves the plot along, or any other interesting feature of its role in the text.
Themes such as vengeance, slavery, and justice are central to the plot of “The
Tempest.” Choose one such theme and discuss how the play treats it from beginning to end. Is the play’s conception of this theme altered over the course of the play’s action?
Use support from the text to explain your position.
Redact a close reading of at least 15 lines of “The Tempest.” Don’t take up room with a surface reading of this text, but rather situate it within its proper context in the play and analyze the text to draw out its greater implications, its allegorical qualities, its effects of foreshadowing, or any other interesting qualities your passage might have.
