American Popular Culture “Love and Theft”

Topic: American Popular Culture “Love and Theft”

Prompt Question:

1. I HAVE SUGGESTED THAT A SUB-TITLE FOR THIS CLASS COULD BE “LOVE AND THEFT.” DISCUSS.

This is an American Popular Culture class/question. I’ve uploaded a word doc with the course description just so you have some background information. To answer the prompt question I have uploaded a word doc of my Professor’s lecture transcript on “Love and Theft”. All the answers you’re looking for are in there, so please read it all and feel free to use the information however you feel. He breaks it all down onto why he thinks the class could be named “Love and Theft” in detail with many examples. Some key terms to pay attention to from the transcript are “minstrel” “lore cycle” “W.T. Lhamon Jr” and “cultural appropriation.” Since the lecture notes are the main source I need a minimum of 8 direct citations from it. The second source I need you to use is “Taylor, Yuval. Darkest America: Black Minstrelsy from Slavery to Hip-Hop.” Since the book is an online copy I’ve uploaded two images with some highlights on the important things to focus on. I need a minimum of 4 direct citations from there. The online version won’t have page numbers so just choose random numbers, I’ll later go back and put the correct ones.

Format: There should be a thesis statement that is no longer than two sentences printed in Boldface. Be straight forward when answering the question get straight to the point. Please also restate the entire prompt at the top of the answer. The paper’s citations should appear in the parenthetical form: Ex (Taylor & Austen, p. 29) The way you should cite the Professor lecture notes is (Stanley, Lecture.)
