Roadblocks and Ethical Issues

In Riverbend City: Human Services Roles, you learned about a new task force that is addressing the issue of youth and teen homelessness in a Riverbend City neighborhood. In your opinion, what is the most serious roadblock the task force may encounter in addressing this issue successfully? What should the task force do to try to overcome this roadblock?

In addition, what is the most serious ethical issue that this task force may encounter? What can the task force do to address this ethical issue?

You are a prison counselor and have a good relationship with the other counselors. You all go out drinking after work sometimes, and in general you like and respect everyone. Recently you’ve noticed that something seems to be going on with one of the other counselors. Stella is usually outgoing and cheerful, but lately she seems distracted and upset. You see her in the parking lot one evening and ask her what is wrong. She confides to you that she is in love with an inmate. She knows it is wrong, but she says that they had an instant chemistry and that he is like no man she has ever known. She has been slipping him love notes, and he has also been writing her. You tell her that she has to stop it or else quit her job. She tearfully tells you that she can’t let him go, she needs her job, and you’ve got to keep quiet or you’ll get her fired. Additional Tips for Student Success:
* We do not have a specific word count for this assignment.  However, most Codes of this nature range between 1,000 and 1,500 words.  If you find yourself significantly under or over these thresholds, you may want to make sure you are on the correct path.
* Do not fill your code of conduct with legal jargon.  An effective code should use clear, active language with short sentences.
* The organization and layout should be attractive with sufficient white space.  Headers, bullet points, and different font sizes can be inviting (but not too much😊).  Do not create a code that looks like a legal document.

What should you do?

 

This week, you will put yourself in an imagined workplace scenario, analyze the situation and make some decisions considering two distinct ethical theories – utilitarianism and egoism. Here’s the scenario:

 

Imagine that you work for Centennial Home Mortgage, Inc. as a manager where you supervise a diverse unit of 5 people. You discover that earlier this year, your company inadvertently exposed the personal details of up to 14 million U.S. customers. Sensitive information such as social security numbers, credit cards numbers, birthdays, addresses, and in some instances, driver’s license numbers were all compromised in the hack.

You tell your immediate supervisor, whose spouse is the Human Resources Officer, and she says she will take care of it. But weeks go by and you hear nothing from corporate leaders.

Unbeknownst to you, some of the company’s top executives sold over $1.8 million worth of shares in the company just days after the breach was discovered. The public was not aware of the breach until more than six weeks later. CCU shares fell more than 30% in seven days after breach was discovered.

Your supervisor finally gets back to you with surprising news – you must give three of your five employees negative, career-damaging appraisals. You are confused – your employees are good employees! Your supervisor shrugs and comments that “certain” employees you supervise are not well-liked by the regional manager, and since someone must be blamed for this security breech and PR disaster, it’s going to be them.

If you refuse, you could face ramifications that include demotion and or loss of job – and you are the primary financial support for your family and an elderly parent  What a mess! What to do?!

 

To complete this comparative essay, answer the following 7 questions, comparing and/or contrasting egoism and utilitarianism.

 

1. First, define egoism and utilitarianism in your own words (yes, define utilitarianism again – you did this earlier in the term).

“ “Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that differentiates right from wrong and just from unjust by focusing on the outcomes. This theory is also categorised as consequentialist theory. Utilitarianism is the only theory that can be utilised to justify war or military force. It is also the most common framework to moral reasoning utilised in businesses because of how it deals with benefits and costs.””

Ethical Dilemmas

In a 1,050- to 1,400-word (or 3- to 4-page) paper, explain what you would do if you found an unethical practice in your workplace. Would it depend on the severity of the unethical practice?

Provide a couple examples of potential unethical practices in your organization that could be considered very minor that people have come to “accept” as opposed to reporting.

Justify why you think that people tend to accept some unethical practices while others are not accepted. Create a continuum of severity model regarding ethical practices in organizations and discuss your model. How did you arrive at the model you created?

Introduction: Ethics in Practice — Whistleblowers

Whistle blowing refers to any time that a member of an organization (or a former member) tells someone else about an illegal, unethical, and/ or immoral practice, if the telling is done in the hopes that someone will do something to change the practice. In the great majority of cases, employees tell someone within the organization and don’t want to cause any bad publicity for the organization—this is sometimes called internal whistle blowing or internal reporting.

Where Do You Come From? We touched a little bit on this question in the week 1 introduction – start your essay off by expanding a bit on the moral foundation you lived with as a child and/or young person – i.e., your roots.  Describe what you believe to be the most important character traits your family of origin valued. This assignment is 15% of your grade. This is an Essay with a 1,500 word-count limit.

Case Situation
You are the Chairman of ABC Ltd, a long established specialist paper-making company. The
company’s next board meeting is due to be held next month. Top of the agenda for the meeting
is the possibility of changing the company’s source of raw materials.
This has come about because for some time now, the company has experienced falling profit
margins. All of the directors had been tasked with identifying ways of reducing the cost base.
One obvious target would be to reduce the level of the workforce but you only want to revert
to this option as a last resort – the work force has been loyal and hard working.
Mr Y, the production director responsible for buying wood pulp, the primary raw material used
in the production of paper, has recommended that the board considers shifting contracts away
from existing Singaporean suppliers in favour of lower cost overseas suppliers. Supporting
this view, the Chief Executive, Mr X, has specifically identified Company XYZ, a company
based in a developing country. It is known that his family have an involvement in this company
and that Mr X personally has a 10% equity stake. Despite the obvious conflict of interest, there
is no doubt that this direct link to the supplier would be of benefit to ABC Ltd if it decided to
take up this option. It would reduce the risks of dealing with a new supplier, particularly one
which is based overseas.
In conversations you have had with some of the other directors, they have expressed concern
that the image of ABC Ltd in the Singapore market will be damaged by withdrawing business
from the domestic suppliers. At present, most of the pulp is purchased from one particular
Singaporean supplier, SG Ltd, with the contract making up over 70% of that supplier’s
business. The expected cost reductions for ABC Ltd are undeniable, but there is a fear that moving the contract will put the existing supplier out of business, and there would be the
associated knock on effects in the local community.
It is also well known that the country from which it is proposed that the pulp be sourced in
future, adopts indiscriminate policies towards deforestation (clearing forest areas), causing
irreparable damage to the eco-system. Its government has consistently argued that the
improvement in the quality of life of its people in rural areas must take priority over natural
resources. Additionally, the political environment is fragile and the possibility of a coup is ever
present.
Another factor is that only just under three years ago ABC Ltd received a regional development
grant for $3,500,000 which was used towards the cost of renewing some of the company’s
outdated equipment. This grant was partly awarded on the basis of retaining jobs in the local
area. The qualifying period will expire in three months time and the local enterprise agency
will not then be able to claw back any of the money – however, you are trying to square the
logic of this with the undoubted damage it would do if ABC Ltd terminated its contract with SG
Ltd.
Having read all the board papers in readiness for the meeting, and having spoken to the other
directors, you are contemplating what recommendations you will make.
